Smart-home standards security assurance for consumer IoT using expert standards-body engagement

Embedding UK security and openness principles in the smart-home standard that became Matter.

The Challenge

As the multi-vendor smart-home industry converged on a single connectivity standard — the Connected Home over IP (CHIP) working group hosted by the Zigbee Alliance / Connectivity Standards Alliance, later renamed Matter — the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre faced a strategic problem: decisions taken inside a US-industry-dominated standards body would determine the security and openness of virtually every smart-home device sold in the UK, and the NCSC had no direct technical presence in the room.

The Solution

Under this consultancy for the NCSC, NQM joined the Connected Home IP working group on the NCSC’s behalf, attending its meetings and producing regular (at least monthly) written reports. NQM proactively worked to embed the openness and security principles exemplified by its earlier IOTSecHub secure-router project into the working group’s practices — bringing evidence from a working, open, gateway-centric security implementation into the standards debate. The engagement was scoped to support the working group with analysis, proofs of concept, presentations and demonstrations, and to escalate security and ecosystem-openness issues to the NCSC.

Outcomes

The output was sustained UK technical influence and intelligence on the emerging CHIP/Matter standard: regular reporting to the NCSC on security-relevant developments, plus advocacy for openness and security-by-design in what became the dominant global smart-home standard.
